Culture Shock

Maybe you have been in the USA a long time, or maybe you're new! Whenever we visit a new country, there's always a chance for culture shock.

Watch the two videos below to hear one international student's experience of when he moved to the USA:

Part 1: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tPfB6GIjM9Q&list=PL430CBE42AC0F8F29
Part 2: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H82IFq0HbTQ

After watching both videos, what do you think about what Dan has to say about moving to the USA? Did you have a similar experience or similar feelings? Write a paragraph about it under the comments.

  1. since i have come to the USA i didn't have a culture shock which make me think until now i'm in phase one. i know almost everyone new in America has a culture shock, and really you can't blame them because there are a lot of differences in the USA and their hometown. i totally i agree with the Dan about culture shock, but i believe not everyone has the three phases and i'm in phase one & three i think i had skipped phase two already. Finally, in my point of view i think it takes usually from two to four months, and you'll overcome from culture shock.

  2. with high technology and easy travel there is no culture shock. first of all world become small and everybody can learn about other culture with social networks and easy traveling. I had known all what I have to know about American culture before I came here, so there is nothing to shock me. second with spread American culture across the world through foods, films,TV show, etc, makes recognition American culture more easy. finely like what the lecturer said if it is will happens it just takes time, so there is nothing scary. it is become easy to understand each with communications and easy travel.

  3. You can't blame anyone come from another country because they have own culture.I think everyone has own experience on culture shock because some of people travel or watch TV shows a lot and they have picture about the culture.I agree with Dan in culture shock, but everyone has own phase with the culture shock. Finally, you will overcome the culture shock after a while of time like what Dan said in the culture and you should to join with people to know about the new culture very well.

  4. First of all, I agree with him of all the words that he has said, but about me I have never got any culture shock of them. I think because my mother is with me. Even though, my mom with me I've got many culture shocks, but he didn't talk about it. One of my culture shocks is about water's hose of the restroom. For me its extremely important thing in the restroom. I had traveled to many Europe countries before I came here. Also, I didn't live in any place out of my city, so I didn't imagine that I can live with out it. I was here in America too in 2001, but I thought after these all years I can find it here in America because we couldn't find any one. Finally, its easy thing if we follow the steps he talked about it.

  5. It was a perfect presentation, Dan explains the culture chuck very clearly. I agree with Dan about what he said on culture chuck. Dan divided the culture chuck in phases. It is not necessary for everyone to go through all phases that he said. The reason of that, now day the technology allowed us to look and share the other culture and some time there is something in common between the cultures. For me, the difficult thing is the homesick; maybe because this is the first time I had been outside my country for a long time. But as what Dan said, every time I feel homesick I remember my goal.

  6. As usual, everyone who needs to come to the US, thinks will confuse with the culture in the US. In my opinion, nobody confusing with other cultures because there are many ways you can learn about the culture of the country which you will visit such as internet, TV shows, and also from people who were visiting these countries. In the other hand, people who visit new countries, should meet people from the country which they visit to know more about their culture. And it will not take long time to know about that.

  7. I liked so much both videos. Dan talks that there are three phases of culture shock and can take 6 months to end. I think it is common to be shocked with the american culture, that is different in many aspects from your own habits, as food and relationship, and each person reacts in a manner. It is not a big deal and you have to be patient, have focus in your personal goals. Furthermore, the video is from 2008 and the technology evolved so much in these last years and shortened the distances. Nowadays, the world is smaller. Almost everybody has access to the web, TV and can learn by yourself about the place you will live, about the culture and their habits. I didn't have a culture shock as I am here for only two months and my course is only by one month.

  8. I love both videos. First, because Dan prepared and presented the topic really well. The presentation and the slide show are pretty good and funny. Second, maybe, because I was able to see me exactly in the same situations, examples and phases.
It is difficult to know how other international students feel about it. This because each has a way of reacting to the situations.
I totally agree with Dan. In my personal experience, it is hard to get away from home, family, friends, culture, etc. But on the other hand, I am having an unique and amazing experience. I'm learning the most powerful language in the world and about other cultures. This opportunity will increase my career and consequently my life.
When I'm homesick or feeling distant from my culture I always remember my goals, like Dan. It really works.

  9. The two presentations by Dan are very successful and interesting, which reflect the culture shock of international students. The culture shock is inevitable in a new country, because we come from different countries. Therefore, we have own customs, civilization and culture, it is never can not be change. When we study in a new country, we will meet some difficulties. For me, I have two difficulties. First, I need think about food every day, because there is no our native food in America. Sometimes, I am really looking for our country's food. Second, it is not easy to communicate with local people, even I do not understand them due to different culture. Maybe others have various conditions. But we have to be patient and know our personal goals. Finally, we will spend some time to overcome each difficulty and culture shock.

  10. I liked so much the videos. I think Dan is right, it's so difficult to adapt to another culture. Dan said that culture shock ends in six months and it is true because it happened to me. I'm in USA since august 2012 and now I'm ok. You just need to know that you're here for a very good reason. In my presonal experience it's hard to learn from another culture. First, it was very difficult for me because I didn't know how to communicate with the people, I had a little vocabular. Second, it is very sad to be far from your family. Just on the weekends I'm homesick I don't know why hahah.

  11. From these two vedios, I really agree with the student who showed us something about the culture shock in the vedios, because I really have some similar experiences. When the first time I came to the U.S, many things make me intrested, such as some beautiful places, some great universities, and a lot of nice cars on the street. In the vedio, the student called this honeymoon, and I really think so. When the time goes on, I also meet many problems in my life, just like difficult communication because of my bad Englsih. Another trouble for me is different lifestyles, this sometimes makes me feel bad and longly, just like some homesick persons. However, I think I'm a lucky guy, because now I have known many friends, they are very friendly such as my classmates and teachers, they makes me feel better, just like my American family. So these make me find my 'Happy Hour' like the student in the vedio. So from all of these similar experiencs, I can feeling the culture shock, so that's why I agree with the student in the vedio.
